This week brings the second solstice of the year — on December 21 — when we see the Sun reaching its most southerly point in the sky, ready to be tracked in its gradual climb to the north. In the Northern Hemisphere, it marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year, as well as the start of winter. In the Southern Hemisphere, the opposite occurs.
Growth is seasonal and cyclical
In the Northern Hemisphere, December is a time to experience stillness and self-reflection: an opportunity to cultivate patience and dive into your heart. Trust the natural rhythms and focus on being intentional. As in nature, we should allow old leaves to shed and fertilize soil for new growth. It’s often during rest and downtime we find the solutions we’re seeking — even realizing they were there all along.
In the Southern Hemisphere, it is a time to enjoy the fruits of our labor: acknowledge and celebrate our accomplishments so far, and prepare for adjustments that move them forward in a steady, consistent, and reliable way.
These are expressions of Capricorn’s energy, which are also represented in the attributes of its ruler, Saturn, the planet that energizes our endurance and resilience, indispensable in the achievement of goals.
🪐 Saturn’s role in this solstice
During this solstice, Saturn closes a series of squares to Uranus that have been on and off over the last two years, creating tension between freedom, spontaneity, and innovation (Uranus) and rules, structure, and stability (Saturn). Though this energy can pose challenges, it’s an opportunity for growth.

✍️ Use these journal prompts to stay on course:
- Evaluate. Which accomplishments am I most proud of this year?
- Change. Which healthy habits will help me thrive during 2023?
- Think big. Which words best describe the energy I want to harness as we head into the new year?
- Visualize. Which personal wins will I achieve and how will I go about them?
- Make space. What should I let go of that is no longer serving me?
Remember balance requires action and inaction. Create space for your dreams: good things take time!
